In this CLEAR and EASY-TO-FOLLOW lab, students investigate if the price of toilet paper is related to its strength when wet. This lab is designed to be simple and straightforward so students can get practice with following the steps of the scientific method, identifying variables, and forming conclusions.

In this hands-on lab activity, students will:

  • Read a focus question.
  • Read background information.
  • Form an “If…Then…” hypothesis.
  • Follow an experimental procedure to test toilet paper strength.
  • Identify independent and dependent variables; controls.
  • Collect and record simple data.
  • Form a conclusion based on simple data using the CER format.

Supplies Needed:

  • Pennies
  • 2 brands of toilet paper (I use school toilet paper for one of them)
  • Beaker or small cup
  • Pipettes or eye droppers
  • Rubber band

Teacher Notes:

  • This activity includes a suggested answer key, but due to the nature of the activity, students will come up with varied responses.
