Types of Rocks and the Rock Cycle CER Activity

Spark some critical thinking! This rock cycle CER activity reviews and reinforces types of rock (sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic) and the rock cycle as students practice making claims from evidence!

In this activity, students will:

  • READ a brief passage.
  • ANALYZE clear and crisp pictures of rocks or a diagram.
  • Make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE for a question related to either rock types or the rock cycle.

There are 16 total claims to make!

Two Ways to Assign!

  1. As Stations: Great for getting kids moving around the room! Each of the 16 station cards has a brief passage and rock pictures or a diagram. Students complete a Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning grid on a worksheet for a simple question at each of the 16 stations.
  2. Digitally: A Google Slides version of this activity is included.

  • Sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks
  • Examples of each type (including great pictures)
  • How different rock types form
  • Characteristics of each rock type
  • The cyclical nature of the rock cycle
