Matter and Chemistry Unit

$187.58 Save 50% on a comprehensive, high-quality unit! This Matter and Chemistry Unit includes everything you need to teach elements and the periodic table, classification of matter, and changes to matter.

All of the work has been done for you – from start to finish!

This resource is comprised of 3 main sections:

  1. Periodic Table Unit – focus on atoms, elements, and the periodic table
  2. Classification of Matter Unit – focus on comparing elements, compounds, and mixtures
  3. Physical and Chemical Changes Unit – focus on physical and chemical changes to matter

These lessons form an ENGAGING and COMPREHENSIVE UNIT, including:

  • Presentation notes with Cloze sheets
  • Informational texts with corresponding worksheets
  • Hands-on labs (all very easy supplies; see below)
  • Engaging and varied supporting activities
  • Worksheets/Homework
  • Quizzes
  • Tests with test reviews
  • Sub plans

Simple Supplies Required for this Unit:

  • Devise a Plan to Separate a Mixture Activity: This activity can be done with or without poster paper.
  • Separate a Mixture Lab: cereal, plastic sandwich bags, water bottles, and magnets
  • Elements, Compounds, Mixtures Activity: assortment of metal nuts, bolts, and washers
  • Penny Lab: sandpaper, pennies, cups or water bottles, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, Sprite (or any substitute liquids of your choice)
  • Evidence of a Chemical Reaction Lab: This lab has 8 mini-labs to choose from. Each included lab uses only supermarket supplies such as vinegar, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, etc. Your exact supply list will vary based on the labs you choose to use, but all supplies are at the grocery store.
  • ALL OTHER ACTIVITIES are paper-based.

Teacher Notes:

Related Standards:

  • NGSS MS-PS1-1: Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
  • NGSS MS-PS1-2: Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after interaction to determine if a chemical reaction occurred.
  • NGSS MS-PS1-5: Develop and use a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is conserved.
