Individual Descriptions:

Valentine’s Day Periodic Table Activity: Use element atomic numbers and symbols to decode 24 words associated with Valentine’s Day, such as Flowers, Be Mine, Cupids, etc. Related NGSS Standard: MS-PS1-1.

Compare Strange Animal Hearts Reading & Questions: Students read about 8 of the strangest hearts in the animal kingdom – from a whale with a heart the size of a piano to an octopus with 3 hearts! In this activity, students will:

  • READ about strange animal hearts.
  • COMPLETE a graphic organizer with information from the text.
  • ANSWER text-dependent questions.

Valentine’s Day Hypothesis & Variables Practice: In this activity, students review “If…Then” hypotheses, identify independent and dependent variables and practice experimental design. Students write an “If…Then” hypothesis for humorous scenarios and identify the independent and dependent variables within their statements. Students also design experiments for 3 humorous Valentine-related hypotheses.

Evaluate Heart Disease Risk in Pretend Patients: Engage students in a real-world study of the cardiovascular system and heart disease at a middle school level. In this activity, students will:

  • Read a brief background about heart disease and how doctors evaluate risk for heart disease (simplified for middle schoolers).
  • Use a “Heart Disease Risk” chart to evaluate the risk factor score for 6 patients.
  • Answer analysis questions about which patients were at the lowest and highest risk of heart disease, and the factors that put them in these categories.
