Individual Descriptions:

Periodic Table Decoder Activity: Use the Periodic Table as a “decoder” for 34 words or phrases associated with summer, such as fireflies, ice cream trucks, sunburns, ocean waves, etc. Related Standard: NGSS MS-PS1-1

Graphing the Sun-Earth Distance Activity: Bust a SUMMER MYTH, practice graphing, and review seasons. In this activity, students will:

• GRAPH the distance between the Sun and Earth for 12 months of the year (bar graph).
• ANSWER follow-up analysis questions, including a CER.
• CONCLUDE that in the Northern Hemisphere, we are NOT closer to the sun in summer! Related Standard: NGSS MS-ESS1-1

Summer-Themed Scientific Method Review: Students review summer-themed “If…Then” hypotheses, identify independent and dependent variables, and practice experimental design. Engaging way to review the scientific method at the end of the year! Related Standard: NGSS Science & Engineering Practice Asking Questions and Defining Problems
