These science skills activities for holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas*, and Valentine’s Day) review science graphing skills, have kids practice making claims from evidence in data, and review experimental design.
There are THREE activities included FOR EACH HOLIDAY, each reviewing a different science skill:
Graphing Practice (4 total): Practice simple graphing skills! Students are given holiday-related data and use it to create line graphs, bar graphs, or pie charts. Graph topic examples include:
- Sugar in different pumpkin foods (Halloween)
- Favorite Halloween candies (Halloween)
- Favorite Thanksgiving meal foods (Thanksgiving)
- Online Black Friday sales over time (Thanksgiving)
- Favorite snow sports (Christmas)
- Changes in caribou populations (Christmas)
- Rose growth (Valentine’s Day)
- Cupid’s motion graph (Valentine’s Day)
Scientific Method Review (4 total worksheets): Students review “If…Then” hypotheses, identify independent and dependent variables, and practice experimental design – all with fun tidbits of real Thanksgiving trivia mixed in.
CER & Data Analysis Stations (4 separate activities): Get kids looking at holiday data to practice both data analysis and making claims from evidence. Students move through 10 stations to read a brief passage about a real-world science scenario, analyze a simple data table, and make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE. Students do not have to make a claim “out of nowhere.” They are asked a pointed question that they answer in the CER format. This covers science-based holiday themes such as:
- Melanin in black cats (Halloween)
- Zombie caterpillars (Halloween)
- Turkey calls (Thanksgiving)
- Psychology of watching football together (Thanksgiving)
- Elf owls (Christmas)
- Candy Canes (Christmas)
- Animal hearts (Valentine’s Day)
- Candy Conversation Hearts (Valentine’s Day)
