In this activity, students will:

  • READ a brief passage about a real-world science scenario with a Valentine’s Day theme.
  • ANALYZE a simple data table.
  • Make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE for a related question. Students do not have to make a claim “out of nowhere.” They are asked a pointed question that they answer in the CER format.

This activity is designed to get kids practicing CER, not learning content. No prior content knowledge is required, and this activity can be used in any secondary science class. Students are able to make a claim based on the information in the text and data table alone.

Covers FUN Science-Based Valentine Themes Such As:

  • Friendship Bracelets (How many strands withstand the most force?)
  • Candy Conversation Hearts (How much food dye is used in each color?)
  • Teddy Bears (Does age affect fabric wear?)
  • Animal Hearts (What is the relationship between body size and heart size?)
  • Plus lots more Valentine’s Day science themes, such as refraction of light in diamonds, how caffeine affects the heart, and more!
