This resource includes 108 “Would You Rather?” Science Edition cards, each related to general middle school science and most based on NGSS life, physical, Earth, space, and technology topics. Students are asked to pick between two ideas – and often the choice is a difficult one! The cards range from silly to serious and are all thought-provoking.
Ways To Play:
- In Pairs: Give a set of cards to pairs or groups of students and let them ask each other the questions on each card – then sit back and listen as lively discussions ensue!
- Whole-Class: Lead a whole-class activity. Read one card aloud, and have students separate to opposite sides of the room based on their choice from the card. Lead a light-hearted debate between the two sides.
- Brain Boosts: Use cards throughout the school year as “brain boosts” at the beginning of class or as ice-breakers to start off a group activity.
- Writing Prompts: Bring more literacy skills into science class!
Example “Would You Rather?” Cards:
- “Would you Rather… Have your house taken away (like habitat destruction in an ecosystem) -OR- Experience a zombie invasion (like an invasive species)?“
- “Would you Rather… Slow down the Earth’s rotation to make days longer -OR- Speed up the Earth’s rotation to make days shorter?“
Teacher Notes:
- Extend the life of this resource by dividing the 12 total sheets into 4 sets of 3 sheets (27 cards each) and use 4 separate times throughout the year. That’s still plenty to have a great game each time!
