Earthquakes Reading & Mapping Activity

Students get tons of background information in an EARTHQUAKES READING and then PLOT EARTHQUAKES ON A MAP to discover that they mostly occur at plate boundaries.

In this activity, students will:

  • READ an article on earthquakes to learn how earthquakes happen, how they are measured, and how scientists predict and reduce their impact.
  • DEFINE KEY VOCABULARY from the text.
  • ANSWER COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS. All answers come from the text, so no prior knowledge is necessary.
  • PREPARE THE MAP. Students “work up” a world map by shading the continents green and oceans blue. They also highlight the equator and prime meridian to make navigating the map easier.
  • PLOT EARTHQUAKE LOCATIONS (latitude and longitude) of several real-life earthquakes on a provided World Map.
  • Answer 3 ANALYSIS QUESTIONS.

Teacher Notes:

  • The earthquakes reading and reading comprehension questions include a digital Google Slides option to assign. The mapping activity is a printable PDF and paper only.
