Natural Hazards CER Activity

Looking for something a little more RIGOROUS for covering NATURAL DISASTERS? Spark critical thinking with a Natural Hazards CER Activity!

This Natural Disasters Activity gets students analyzing REAL DATA while applying their understanding of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, droughts, tornadoes, etc.

Students rotate through 12 data analysis stations, reading short scientific explanations and interpreting data tables to construct Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) responses.

12 NO PREP Stations Cover the Following Natural Hazard Topics:
  • earthquakes
  • tornadoes
  • hurricanes
  • volcanoes
  • tsunamis
  • mass wasting (landslides)
  • wildfires
  • flooding
  • drought
HOW IT WORKS: Students visit 12 NO PREP stations.
At each, students will:
  • READ a brief passage on each station card. The station card describes a real-world, interesting aspect of a topic related to a natural hazard. Each station card also includes a DATA TABLE or MAP related to the information.
  • Answer the given question to make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE. Students use the information in the brief text and the data table to make their claim. Students do not have to make a claim “out of nowhere.” They are asked a pointed question that they answer in the CER format.
