IMPORTANT NOTE: This resource is NOT designed to cover the specific characteristics of each element group (family). The intent of this resource is asses understanding of:
- Elements in the same group (family) have the same number of valence electrons and chemical properties.
- Elements in the same period have the same number of energy levels.
This activity has 3 sections:
- In PART ONE, students look at atom diagrams and use the diagrams to predict groups and periods of the elements shown.
- In PART TWO, students look at a diagram of example elements on the periodic table and use the information to predict information about their groups and periods.
- In PART THREE, students make claims about how valence electrons and energy levels can be used to predict and element’s position on the periodic table.
