Non-Mendelian Genetics Reading for Middle School

Need a non-Mendelian genetics reading for middle school that is at an INTRODUCTORY level? Here it is! Introduce genetics beyond simple dominance! Give students a basic understanding of codominance, incomplete dominance, multiple alleles, sex-linked traits, and polygenic traits.

⭐ Check out my complete GENETICS UNIT! It has EVERYTHING YOU NEED to teach a middle school unit on genetics! ⭐

This article is meant to give middle school students an introductory-level understanding of these concepts and isn’t as rigorous as you would need for high school biology.

In this activity, students will learn about and get real-world examples of:

  • Codominance (plus practice a Punnett square for this inheritance)
  • Incomplete dominance (plus practice a Punnett square for this inheritance)
  • Multiple alleles
  • Sex-linked traits
  • Polygenic traits

Unlike most of my readings, PRIOR KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED for this reading. Students need to have a basic background in the following terms:

  • Dominant/recessive
  • Homozygous/heterozygous
  • Genotype/phenotype

Includes a 2-page article and a 2-page follow-up worksheet.
