Non-Mendelian Genetics Reading for Middle School

This article is meant to give middle school students an introductory-level understanding of these concepts and isn’t as rigorous as you would need for high school biology.

In this activity, students will learn about and get real-world examples of:

• Codominance (plus practice a Punnett square for this inheritance)
• Incomplete dominance (plus practice a Punnett square for this inheritance)
• Multiple alleles
• Sex-linked traits
• Polygenic traits

Unlike most of my readings, PRIOR KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED for this reading. Students need to have a basic background in the following terms:

• Dominant/recessive
• Homozygous/heterozygous
• Genotype/phenotype
