Practice graphing while supporting students’ understanding of Newton’s Second Law of Motion. After this sports-themed activity, students will understand the relationship between the variables force, mass, and acceleration.

This activity has several parts:

  • Part One: Demonstrate the relationship between mass and force. Given their mass, calculate the force (F=MxA) of various sports balls thrown at a given acceleration. Then, graph mass versus force (acceleration constant).
  • Part Two: Demonstrate the relationship between acceleration and force. Calculate the force (F=MxA) of a baseball thrown at different accelerations. Then, graph acceleration versus force (mass constant).
  • Part Three: Answer follow-up analysis questions.

  • NGSS Science & Engineering Practices: Analyzing and interpreting data; Using mathematics and computational thinking

Teacher Notes:

  • This activity is designed for MIDDLE SCHOOL, but would also be appropriate for an introductory level high school course.
  • INCLUDES ANSWER KEY.
  • Please note that this Newton’s 2nd Law Activity is not editable.
