Evolution Evidence Activity: CER Worksheet

This evolution evidence activity reviews the different types of evidence for evolution using the Claims-Evidence-Reasoning format! Students read a short text and analyze a diagram to make a CLAIM from EVIDENCE.

⭐ Get this at a HUGE DISCOUNT in my Evidence of Evolution Bundle! ⭐

In this activity, students will:

  • READ a short passage that briefly explains one of the types of evidence for evolution.
  • ANALYZE a clear diagram, such as embryos, DNA sequence, and homologous structures.
  • MAKE A CLAIM from evidence in the diagram. Each section has a question to answer. Students use evidence in the text and diagram to answer the question in the form of a claim.

Evidence and Terms Covered:

  • common ancestor
  • fossils
  • law of superposition
  • homologous structures
  • vestigial structures
  • embryo
  • DNA

Diagrams Include:

  • Rock Strata (law of superposition)
  • Horse Ancestor Fossils (fossils)
  • DNA Sequence of Various Organisms (molecular evidence)
  • Forelimb Structures (homologous structures)
  • Whale Skeleton (vestigial structures)
  • Embryonic Development

Teacher Notes:

Related Standards:

  • NGSS MS-LS4-2: Apply scientific ideas to construct an explanation for the anatomical similarities and differences among modern organisms and between modern and fossil organisms to infer evolutionary relationships.
  • NGSS MS-LS4-3: Analyze displays of pictorial data to compare patterns of similarities in the embryological development across multiple species to identify relationships not evident in the fully formed anatomy.
