Students read an engaging article about the top 15 misconceptions in science AND THE TRUTH BEHIND THEM!

In this activity, students will:

  • READ an article in the “top 15” list format about commonly held misconceptions in science.
  • DEFINE key terms using context clues from the reading.
  • ANSWER text-dependent questions. All answers come from the text, so no prior knowledge is required!

Topics Included in the Reading (at a middle school level):

  • Bacteria aren’t all bad.
  • Batteries don’t store electricity.
  • Dinosaur bones are actually minerals.
  • We use a lot more than 10% of our brain.
  • Magnets don’t attract all metals.
  • Plants don’t make food to feed animals.
  • Cold doesn’t move.
  • The amount of light on the moon doesn’t change.
  • Vacuums don’t suck.
  • Earth’s seasons are due to proximity to the Sun.
  • The Sun isn’t fire.
  • Mass isn’t the same as weight.
  • Bats aren’t blind.
  • Humans didn’t evolve from monkeys.
  • Blood is always red (not ever blue).
