Thermal Energy Demonstrations

This is a set of thermal energy demonstrations for 9 different teacher demos you can do during a unit on particle motion, thermal expansion, and heat. Some require supplies from a science supply store, while others do not.

Demos Included:

  1. Thermal expansion with a bimetallic strip
  2. Thermal expansion with a brass balls and ring
  3. Thermal expansion with a water bottle and balloon
  4. Thermal expansion with a water bottle and a coin
  5. Convection: tea bag “rockets”
  6. Convection: pinwheels
  7. Convection: convection box
  8. Convection: lava lamp
  9. Conduction: conductometer

Related Standards:

  • NGSS MS-PS1-4: Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.
  • NGSS MS-PS3-3: Apply scientific principles to design, construct, and test a device that either minimizes or maximizes thermal energy transfer.
