Temperatures Worksheet

Before middle school students can master NGSS MS-PS3-4 (thermal energy, heat), they need to understand TEMPERATURE! This temperatures worksheet familiarizes kids with some everyday Celsius temperatures and provides practice for temperature conversions.

In Part One of this worksheet, students are given temperature data such as “Antarctica”, “Sahara Desert”, “Gold Melts”, etc. They are given the temperature in one scale (Kelvin, Celsius or Fahrenheit) and must convert it to the other two scales. Students gain familiarity with everyday temperatures (oven, room temperature, water freezing) – but on the metric scales they aren’t accustomed to using.

Part Two has 9 blank thermometers. Students must color in the level that the alcohol would rise to for each given temperature, illustrating that Celsius and Fahrenheit temperatures will be DIFFERENT for the same level of alcohol.

Part Three asks students to explain how a thermometer works (thermal expansion).

Part Four gives students the average temperature on different planets, and students must convert the data into Fahrenheit. They then answer a few questions comparing the temperatures on different planets.
