Students read 4 short and engaging informational text passages about physical changes and chemical reactions. Then, they complete a CER for each section using evidence from the text for each one.

The CERs focus on evidence of a physical versus a chemical change. Concepts included include physical and chemical changes to matter and the terms exergonic and endothermic.

Each of the 4 Sections (1 page each) Include:

  • Short, engaging text passage
  • Claims-Evidence-Reasoning question(s)
  • Follow up questions

Passage Topics Include:

  • Glow sticks
  • Popcorn
  • Bioluminescence in the ocean
  • Cold packs (for injuries)

We find this a helpful practice for standardized tests because it requires using background knowledge and information from text to arrive at an answer.

Teacher Notes:

  • Includes answer key.
