Genetics Lab

In this NO PREP genetics lab activity, students BUILD THEIR OWN BABY from a combination of alleles. This activity is a FUN student favorite but also nails home that two parents contribute one allele each to a child.

In this activity, students will:

  • READ background information about genetics basics.
  • FOLLOW clear, step-by-step directions to create a baby! In pairs, students flip coins to determine the 26 genotypes of their “baby.”
  • DRAW the phenotype of their baby by interpreting the genotypes that they flipped for.
  • ANSWER follow-up questions based on the activity.
  • Make CLAIMS from EVIDENCE based on the activity.

Materials Needed: 1 penny per student

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED for this activity. Students need to have a basic background in the following concepts:

  • Dominant/recessive
  • Homozygous/heterozygous
  • Genotype/phenotype

  • Answer keys are always included!
  • NGSS MS-LS3-2: Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
