HOW IT WORKS: Students visit 10 stations. At each, students will:

  • READ a brief passage on each station card. The station card describes a real world, interesting example of a symbiotic relationship. Each station card also includes a data table related to the information.
  • Answer a given question to make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE. Students use the information in the brief text and the data table to make their claim. Students do not have to make a claim “out of nowhere.” They are asked a pointed question that they answer in the CER format.

10 Stations Cover the Following Topics:

  • Parasitism (3 stations)
  • Mutualism (4 stations)
  • Commensalism (3 stations)

Please note that even if students have prior knowledge of the specific relationship in the cards (for instance, if they already know that mistletoe is a parasite on oak trees), they still have to USE DATA FROM THE DATA TABLE to support their claim. So, even though they may already know that this is a parasitic relationship, they have to support this with data.
