This bundle contains:

  1. Sound Waves Notes: Students view a presentation (provided in PPT and Google Slides) as they fill in the blanks on a corresponding Cloze notes worksheet.
  2. Sound Waves Reading and Worksheet: Students read about what sound is, the properties of sound waves (wavelength, amplitude, frequency), and how sound waves interact (transmission, reflection, absorption).
  3. Hands-On Mini Lab Stations Activity: Students will visit 8 stations. At each station, students will conduct a mini-investigation into a topic related to sound. First, they will read a quick “background information” section. Then, students will follow simple step-by-step directions to observe wave properties. They’ll collect and analyze data from their mini experiments and answer follow-up analysis questions.
  4. Sound Waves Quiz: This 10-question multiple choice quiz is meant to assess NGSS MS-PS4-1 and MS-PS4-2. It’s easy to correct and comes with two versions.

These sound waves activities cover NGSS MS-PS4-1 and MS-PS4-2, including:

  • Sound waves are vibrations that travel through matter
  • Mediums that sound waves may pass through (solids, liquids, and gases)
  • Sound waves travel fastest in solids and slowest in gases
  • Properties of sound waves (amplitude, frequency, wavelength)
  • A sound’s loudness is associated with the amplitude of its wave
  • A sound’s pitch is associated with the frequency of its wave
  • The three main ways that sound waves interact (absorption, reflection, transmission)

Teacher Notes:

  • The quiz and notes ARE editable. The reading and lab stations are NOT editable.
  • Answer keys are always included.
  • You can also shop my TPT store!
  • Get every lesson you need to teach waves in my COMPLETE WAVES UNIT

Related Standards:

  • NGSS MS-PS4-1: Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave.
  • NGSS MS-PS4-2: Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.
