Set of MS-LS1-5 Lessons

$28.45 SAVE 30% with a bundle that includes 8 NGSS MS-LS1-5 Lessons – EVERYTHING you need to teach this unit! Students will learn how both genetic and environmental factors affect the growth of organisms – nature versus nurture.

Included Lessons:

  • Notes: Students view a presentation and fill in the blanks on a Cloze worksheet. (Both PPT and Google Slides included.)
  • Article and Worksheet: Students read about how genetic and environmental factors both influence the growth of organisms. Then, they answer text-dependent questions on a related worksheet.
  • Worksheets (2): Students practice identifying genetic and environmental factors that affect the growth of interesting organisms.
  • CER & Data Analysis Stations: Students move through 12 stations. Each station card describes a real-life, interesting example of how genetics, environment, or both, influence the growth of an organism. Each station card includes either a simple graph or a simple data table related to the information. Students answer a question to make a CLAIM based on the EVIDENCE provided.
  • Environmental Factors Paper Lab: Students measure the wingspan and eyespot on Buckeye Butterflies (images) to determine how temperature (environmental factor) affected their growth.
  • Genetic Factors Paper Lab: Students count the digital pads on images of cat paws. They use this information and information from a data table to determine if cats’ “double paws” are influenced by the environment or genetics.
  • Final Assessment: The unit concludes with a 10-question multiple-choice assessment. Critical thinking is required to answer the questions!

Related Standard:

  • NGSS MS-LS1-5: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms.
