Ocean Tides CER Activity

This tides CER activity reviews and reinforces ocean tides. Plus, students practice data analysis and make claims from evidence!

In this activity, students will:

• READ a brief passage.
• ANALYZE a simple data table, graph, or diagram related to tides.
• Make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE for a question related to tides.

There are 16 total claims to make from analyzing a graph, data table, or diagram!

Two Options to Assign!

1. As Stations: Great for getting kids moving around the room! Each of the 16 station cards has a brief passage and a data table, graph, or diagram. Students complete a Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning grid on a worksheet for a question at each of the 16 stations.
2. Digitally: A Google Slides version of this activity is included. No copies needed! Easy!

Topics include:

• Neap tides, spring tides, and related moon phases
• Obtaining information from a simple tide chart
• Daily tide patterns; high versus low tide
• Monthly tide patterns
• Positions of the Earth, Sun, and moons for various tides
