Environmental Impact of AI Reading and Worksheet

In this environmental impact of AI reading, students learn how AI systems use energy and resources, how they impact the environment, and how scientists and engineers work to reduce these effects as they balance the pros and cons of AI use.
Includes both print and Google Slides options to assign!
 
In this activity, students will:
  • READ a 2-page text passage about AI and the environment, including energy use, data centers, resource extraction, and environmental impacts.
  • ANSWER text-dependent questions. The worksheet also includes graphic organizer-type sections for students to organize and apply what they have learned. No prior knowledge is required – all information comes directly from the text.

  • Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Data centers and heat production
  • Water use in cooling systems
  • Resource extraction and mining for hardware
  • Electronic waste (e-waste)

  • MS-ESS3-3: Students analyze ways to reduce human environmental impacts such as energy use, water use, and waste production.
  • MS-ESS3-4: Students examine how increased use of technology leads to greater resource consumption and environmental effects.
  • MS-ETS1-1: Students evaluate trade-offs and consider how engineers design solutions to reduce environmental impacts.
