It’s amazing how much middle school students DON’T know about nutrition and reading nutrition labels. Students always really get into this activity, and it leads to great discussions about what “healthy” food really means.
This is a 2-Part Activity:
- Part One: Students read the article “Why do we need food?”. The article explains the basics of calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamin, and minerals.
- Part Two: Students read the article “Reading Food Labels”. The article explains the basics of reading and analyzing Nutrition Facts boxes. then, they analyze real-life food labels so they can get a better idea about what is actually in the foods they are digesting. On the worksheet, they record these macro-nutrients (in grams) and then answer analysis questions.
To get the number and variety of food labels needed, bring some in from home AND have each student bring in 3 for a homework assignment leading up to this activity.
