Data Analysis & Science CER Bell Ringers

These Science CER Bell Ringers help you practice important science skills from DAY ONE! Do a little bit of data analysis every day for the first month of science class!

➡️ Are you on my email list?
➡️ Heads-Up: I’ll be sending you something very similar to this (not exactly the same) for FREE in early August! Stay tuned! Or get on my list before then!

Many students walk into middle school science unable to read simple graphs, interpret data tables, or support a claim with evidence. This resource gives students structured practice with all three skills from the very beginning of the school year.

Students will analyze simple graphs and data tables, answer data-based questions, and write short Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) responses. The topics are all back-to-school themed, making these activities perfect for the first few weeks of school!

In these activities, students will:

  • READ a short, relatable back-to-school scenario.
  • ANALYZE a simple bar graph, line graph, or data table.
  • Make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE for a related question.

The data and the questions are SIMPLE BY DESIGN. This activity is meant to get kids practicing the skill of analyzing data and answering questions in the CER format. It is NOT designed to have kids wrestling with content knowledge yet. This is SKILLS PRACTICE that sets them up for analyzing content-based data later on.

No prior content knowledge is required. Topics are all everyday school-life situations, so every student can dive right into the data with zero background knowledge.
