Cladogram Activities

$12.48 These cladogram activities are a great way to TEACH, PRACTICE, and CREATE cladograms! Students learn how scientists diagram evolutionary relationships. Get cladograms notes, an engaging cladograms article, two practice worksheets, and a fun primate cladogram lesson.

This money-saving bundle includes the following lessons:

  1. CLADOGRAM NOTES: Includes both a presentation and a corresponding Cloze notes worksheet. Students view the presentation as they fill in the blanks on the worksheet.
  2. CLADOGRAM READING: Includes a 2-page reading designed to introduce students to reading cladograms and phylogenetic trees. Also includes a brief follow-up worksheet.
  3. WORKSHEET #1: Practice reading cladograms. Includes 4 different cladogram diagrams of different evolutionary trees. Students evaluate the diagrams to answer questions about evolutionary relationships between certain organisms.
  4. WORKSHEET #2: Start making simple cladograms. In part one, students have more practice reading cladograms. In part two, students use provided data to add information to a given cladogram. In part three, students generate a simple cladogram on their own by analyzing a data chart about animal features.
  5. BUILD A PRIMATE CLADOGRAM: Students learn about traits of primates and use them to build a simple cladogram to show their evolutionary relationships.

These activities will teach students:

  • How scientists called taxonomists map relationships between species using physical and molecular evidence for evolution
  • How to read and interpret cladograms (basic evolutionary trees)
  • How to read and interpret phylogenetic trees (showing time and changes)
  • Trace common ancestors and shared traits
  • The basics of using traits to build a simple cladogram

Teacher Notes:

  • Answer keys are always included.
  • Please note: These cladogram activities are NOT editable.

Related Standards:

  • NGSS MS-LS4-1: Analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth under the assumption that natural laws operate today as in the past.
  • NGSS MS-LS4-2: Apply scientific ideas to construct an explanation for the anatomical similarities and differences among modern organisms and between modern and fossil organisms to infer evolutionary relationships.
