In this activity, students will:
- READ an article about 10 significant advancements in science that happened by accident. The article explains what the scientist was studying and compares that to what they actually found out by accident.
- DEFINE key terms using context clues from the reading.
- ANSWER text-dependent questions. All answers come from the text, so no prior knowledge is required!
- Complete a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER to summarize the information learned in the text.
Examples of mistakes included:
- When Henri Moissan was trying to create fake diamonds, he accidentally created silicon carbide, which is vital to semiconductors for electronics.
- When Charles Goodyear dropped a mix of rubber and sulfur onto a hot stove, he accidentally created vulcanized rubber, which led to strong, flexible rubber used in countless products.
- When Percy Spencer was trying to improve the use of radar, he accidentally melted a chocolate bar in his pocket, which led to the invention of the microwave oven.
